Ville de GatineauCommunity and collective gardens

Gatineau has 11 community gardens and 3 collective gardens where its residents can do their gardening in areas specifically set up for the purpose in the city's different sectors. Gardeners grow everything from vegetables to herbs and berries, as well as various annual and perennial ornamental plants.

Background

Gatineau's first community garden, as currently structured, was set up by a group of residents in the early 1980s. Since 2006, when the support framework for community and collective gardens was adopted, Gatineau has been working to promote the popularity of community gardening

A gardening expert regularly visits the gardens to provide advice to the gardeners. Some gardens have adapted plots for people with reduced mobility. The members of each community garden elect a committee of volunteers to look after it.

In community gardens, the gardeners are responsible for maintaining their own plots, and are the sole beneficiaries of their harvest. The common areas are jointly maintained by the members. In collective gardens, the entire area is everyone's responsibility, and the members share the entire harvest.
