Grasscycling is when you leave the grass clippings on the lawn after you mow it.
This practice has a number of environmental, economic and practical benefits.
Reduce the amount of time you spend mowing the lawn
Because you leave the clippings on the ground, you don't have to rake them up or empty the bag.
Reduce your use of fertilizer
Grass clippings are an excellent natural source of fertilizer, supplying at least 30% of the minerals your lawn requires.
Reduce your use of water
Grass clippings are 80% water, so they provide much of the water your lawn requires. In addition, the clippings you leave on the ground reduce the amount of water lost through evapotranspiration.
Reduce the amount of weeds
It has been proven that when you keep the grass longer, grasscycling reduces the amount of weeds because they have no place to grow.
Reduce the amount of waste
Grasscycling means less organic waste being transported by trucks, which means less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
In the summer, keep the grass around 8 cm high, except the first and last time you mow it, when you should cut it down to 5 cm.
Never mow more than one-third of the length off at a time. This way you'll have short clippings, which will not be visible and will decompose more easily.
You can use any kind of mower blade when grasscycling, but a mulching blade is best, as it produces smaller clippings. Mulching blades can be installed on most lawn mowers.
Minimize watering other than for new lawns, and follow the municipal by-laws on the use of drinking water. You might be interested to know that in Quebec, 65 to 100% of the amount of water required by a lawn is provided in the form of rainfall.
When it's dry, Kentucky pasture grass goes dormant, and turns yellow to better resist that stress. Do not worry, it is not dead and does not need more water. It will recover once it starts raining again.
Control dandelions by uprooting them manually or by mowing the lawn before the flowers go to seed.
Opt for ground covering plants or inert materials when conditions are not conducive to having a lawn.
