Winter parking

Winter overnight parking is prohibited as follows except for residents with general winter overnight parking permits who may park overnight on the street in the winter. Overnight winter parking is always prohibited when snow-clearing operations are underway.

When a parking ban notice is issued, an information notice is displayed at the top of this page, text messages and e-mail notifications are sent to subscribers. Notices are also published on our official Twitter timeline.

How to get a general winter overnight parking permit

From November 12, 2018, residents will be able to purchase these permits for $87 for the season at any service centre or from the Division du stationnement.

Accepted methods of payment are: cash, debit card, Visa and Mastercard.

You may download, print and complete the Application for a general permit for winter overnight parking in order to accelerate the process when you arrive at any service centres or at the Division du stationnement.

In order to purchase a general winter overnight parking permit, residents require a driver's licence indicating a residence in Gatineau.

With this permit, a resident can park anywhere in Gatineau where parking is permitted, with the exception of certain identified streets*. Permits are transferable between cars.

When does the general winter overnight parking permit become valid?

When does the general winter overnight parking permit become valid? The general winter overnight parking permit is valid from December 1 to April 1.

The director of the Service des travaux publics may delay the parking ban until after December 1 if conditions so warrant. The parking ban, which applies to anyone who does not have a permit, comes into effect 24 hours after the official order is issued by the director.

The director may also order that the parking ban be lifted before April 1 if conditions so warrant.

Parking ban notices will be issued as soon as Environment Canada forecasts 5 to 10 centimetres or more of snow for the Gatineau-Ottawa region.

Once issued, the parking ban applies to everyone, including general winter overnight parking permit holders and others*. This means no on-street parking from midnight to 6 a.m. Monday to Friday, and from 3 to 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, until the ban is lifted.

*Exceptions.

A specific winter overnight parking permit is required for residents of the following streets or the municipal parking lots below:

Receiving parking ban notices

General winter overnight parking permit holders may receive notices of parking bans and of the lifting of parking bans by text message or by e-mail if they sign up for the E-mail and text message (SMS) parking ban notices through the Web.

  • Parking ban notices are issued no later than 3 p.m. on the same day.
  • Residents can sign up to receive the notices when they purchase their permits.
  • Parking ban notices and lifting of parking ban notices will also be available through 311, the municipal Web site and the social media.

Once the snow removal operation is completed, a second message will be issued once the parking ban is lifted.

An average of 6 notices are issued per season.
