A chimney that is attached to a slow burning heating unit (main source or auxiliary) must be cleaned at least once a year or as soon as a 3 mm layer of creosote has accumulated.
Faulty maintenance of chimneys and heating apparatus cause numerous fires every year.
If your stove, furnace or fireplace was not used during the summer, debris, leaves and branches may have accumulated inside your chimney and birds may even have nested in it. Combustible materials inside a chimney can ignite and be the cause of a major fire. It is therefore strongly suggested that you have your chimney swept in the fall just prior to starting up your heating system.
According to Ville de Gatineau's statistics, 75% of the city's fires happened inside the home, and 8% of these were caused by improper maintenance of the heating system. Practise caution and watchfulness: check and maintain your heating system once each year before resuming its use.
