There must always be a minimum 1.5 m clearance around a fire hydrant, which must be clearly visible, unobstructed by trees, bushes, fences, etc.
Private fire hydrants
Private fire hydrants on commercial, industrial or major development properties must be:
- painted (the head and the covers of the exit taps) according to NFPA standards. Colours vary depending on the flow from the fire hydrant;
- maintained, checked and inspected annually;
- clearly indicated so they can be readily located; and
- kept clear of snow and otherwise accessible at all times.
