Fun for All at the 2018 Winterlude Snowflake Kingdom

Gatineau, January 24, 2018. – The Winterlude Snowflake Kingdom will be open from February 2 to 19 at a brand new site. Everything is in place to offer the same unique winter experience that families have come to expect! Gatineau magician Daniel Coutu is the event's new spokesperson.

At a glance

The 2018 Snowflake Kingdom has moved to the northernmost tip of Jacques-Cartier Park!
- The new site is about 650 metres to the north, still in Jacques-Cartier Park.
- The site move is temporary, and is due to the Mosaïvernales event organized by Mosaïcultures internationales de Montréal.
Admission to the Snowflake Kingdom is still free for everyone!
Daniel Coutu is the event's spokesperson.
- A native of Gatineau, he is very familiar with the Snowflake Kingdom, which he visited as a child.
- He rediscovered the very popular spot with his own children a few years ago.
- This year, he will share his experience with visitors.

- An additional route (red line on the map) will link the Snowflake Kingdom, Mosaïvernales and the Robert-Guertin park-and-ride.
- Both shuttles will run over the three weekends of Winterlude.
- The shuttle service is free.
For the list of parking lots, go to the Snowflake Kingdom Web site.

Highlights

The Snowflake Kingdom, an annual family rendez-vous

Every year, 200,000 visitors take part in the activities at Winterlude's Snowflake Kingdom. More than a quarter of them are from outside the national capital region.
The event is designed around the theme of winter pleasures.
The Snowflake Kingdom is the second home of the Ice Hog family, the famous Winterlude mascots.
There will be three tubing slides on one giant snow structure, with 200 tubes (single and double) for the 19 lanes. Each of the slides has a different slope, height and speed to accommodate the different age groups.
In addition to the slides, there will be:
- an introduction to downhill skiing and snowboarding for the youngsters;
- dogsled rides on weekends;
- giant games for loads of fun;
- shows and buskers throughout the grounds;
- an interactive multimedia projection; and
- outdoor fire pits where visitors can warm up.
For the full program lineup, go to snowflakekingdom.ca.

Site construction

The new site measures more than 55,000 m2 (590,000 ft2).
More than 40,000 m3 of snow will have been made to create this huge winter playground. This represents the contents of approximately 2,850 dump trucks.
The park was designed by a team of outdoor activity planning experts. Professional sculptors will lend it the finishing touches.
At any given time, there are approximately 100 people on hand to look after the visitors. These include volunteers, entrepreneurs and employees of Ville de Gatineau and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Quotes

“Everything is in place to offer the same unique winter experience that visitors have come to expect! In addition to the two free shuttle buses provided on weekends, festival-goers will have access to parking near the site. This will help make it more affordable for families to enjoy the winter pleasures, particularly with the free admission!” indicated Deputy Mayor and Parc-de-la-Montagne–Saint-Raymond district municipal councillor Louise Boudrias.

“The pleasures of winter are ready to be discovered at Snowflake Kingdom's new location, easily accessible thanks to the free OLG Sno-Bus shuttle. Visitors will enjoy the activities they've always loved, like the super slides, as well as wonderful surprises like fun Northern activities and shows for all ages. All this and more await you at the new site,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.
