Gatineau has 89 outdoor skating rinks throughout the city, five of which are for the general public, 60 others, either with or without boards, are spread across 38 sites, and 24 of which are neighbourhood rinks.
Access to Gatineau's rinks is free, and open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from late December to early March, subject to weather conditions. Rinks are closed during snow storms.
The rinks are flooded twice a week.
They are inspected daily by municipal employees to make sure that they are safe, and to encourage users to be prudent and to comply with municipal by-laws.
Rinks throughout Gatineau are patrolled by a mobile unit.
After a storm, it can take up to 24 hours to clean the rinks. The snow is cleared off of them as soon as at least 2 cm has fallen and the precipitation has stopped.
Contractors only clear the snow from the rinks after a snowfall.
