Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Bulky items

I have more bulky items than the permitted limit. What are my options?

You can register for the next available collection for your additional items.

Bulky items are accepted at all times at the ecocentres.

Why is registration for electronic bulky items and refrigerators done using a separate form rather than through the DTRITUS app?

Electronic products contain heavy metals, and coolants contain polluting gases. To ensure compliance with regulations and avoid polluting, these items cannot be collected by the compactor trucks that collect other bulky items.

Ville de Gatineau has a separate contract with another collector for those.

Where are bulky items taken?

Bulky items are taken to a sorting centre, where everything is sorted and optimally recycled.

Excess trash bags and tags

Are white or black bags with the Ville de Gatineau logo still accepted? Do they need a tag?

Yes, those bags are still accepted.

No, you do not need to tag them.

My tags indicate a previous year (e.g. 2024). Are they still good for this year?

Yes, tags are always good. The year indicated on them merely refers to the year they were made.

Yard waste

I have more than 20 bags of leaves for every yard waste special collection. What should I do?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Place some of your leaves in your brown bin every week;
  • Spread your bags out over several collections to remain within the 20 bag limit per collection;
  • Use European model wheeled bins (any colour other than blue, 80 to 360 L) identified by a “V” (no limit for identified wheeled bins). These bins are emptied every week during the regular collection of compostables;
  • Bring your bags at no charge to a permanent or mobile ecocentre (no limit on the number of bags for residents);
  • Consider domestic composting or leafcycling.
Why is there a 20 bag limit?

A curbside review conducted in fall 2023 revealed that very few homes had more than 20 bags for any given collection, the conclusion being that the limit works for the great majority of residents.

You should also consider that spreading out the bags over several collections will help you remain within the limit.

Why is yard waste not collected in the summer?

In the summer, most yard waste comes from garden waste, branches (after extreme weather events), grass clippings and hedge trimmings.

These can be managed in other ways than a special collection:

  • Yard waste and grass clipping can be placed in brown bins or European model wheeled bins (any colour other than blue, 80 to 360 L) identified by a “V” for collection with compostables;
  • Branches can be collected with bulky items (with registration);
  • Cedar hedge trimmings can be collected at no charge by certain local organizations;
  • Grass clippings can be left on the lawn to reduce residues at the source and serve as fertilizer (grasscycling).
Why are there different ways to set out branches for collection depending on their diameter?

Branches measuring 4 cm or less in diameter can be composted along with kitchen scraps and yard waste.

Branches measuring more than 4 cm in diameter are taken to a sorting centre for construction materials to be sorted and recycled. A limit of 10 cm is set to avoid damaging the trucks during the collection.

Why must the branches be tied together into bundles?

To make it easier for the garbage collectors. You can tie them with string, ideally made of natural fibres such as hemp or jute.

To learn more about the regulations related to waste management, see the current bylaw.
