Reporting a problem

Once the precipitation ends, allowance must be made for the following timeframes according to the different situations (standard, difficult or critical) for clearing:

  • Roads: standard: 12 h, difficult: 16 h, critical: 24 h;
  • Sidewalks and multi-purpose pathways: standard: 16 h, difficult: 20 h, critical: 24 h.

To learn more about winter situations and service levels for clearing roads, sidewalks and multi-purpose pathways.

311 requests are only accepted after the expiration of the intervention timeframe provided for each situation (standard, difficult or critical), that is to say, 12 h, 16 h, 20 h or 24 h.

To report a problem related to snow clearing, you can submit a request online or call 311.

Damage to property

Sometimes, the amount of snow accumulation reduces visibility. Gatineau's snow clearing equipment can then accidentally damage lawns on the municipal right of way or on your property. Be sure to report these occurrences by calling 311. The situation will be reviewed, and if Gatineau is responsible, repairs will be made to your property in the summer.

Other structures or installations may also get damaged. Please note that f you installed geotextiles, retaining walls or sprinklers on the public right of way, Gatineau is not liable for damage to these caused by its equipment during snow clearing operations.

The municipal by-law stipulates that any structure, vegetation, edging or retaining wall must be on private property at least 1.5 m from any sidewalk or curb. In the event of non-compliance, Gatineau is not liable for damage to these and will not carry out any repairs or pay any financial compensation.

For additional information, you can consult the section entitled Les normes à respecter on the Clôtures résidentielles page (in French only) to ensure that your structure is on your property, as provided under the municipal by-law.
