Bulky items are too large to fit into bins for collection.

Bulky items will now be collected by appointment only. It will be possible to have them collected more often throughout the year!

How should you dispose of bulky items?

  • Ecocentres: Drop off your bulky items at the ecocentre*. To find out what they will take, locations and hours, go to Ecocentres and waste transfer centre.

    * Fees depend on the user, and are set out in by-law no. 61-2006 (available in French only) listing the fees for goods, services and activities offered by Ville de Gatineau. Access to the ecocentres is free for several categories of trash for Gatineau residents.
  • Furniture stores and sellers: When you buy a new mattress or appliance, for instance, you can ask the store to take away the item you are replacing.
  • Curbside and on-request pick-up: Check the options listed on this page.

Before making an appointment to have your bulky items picked up or taking them to the ecocentre, see if there might be another option, such as selling or donating them.

Collection of bulky items by appointment

Make an appointment through the DTRITUS app, which you can download from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) or use one of the buttons below.

Starting July 6, GoRecycle will be collecting refrigerators and other refrigeration appliances. GoRecycle is the organization designated by the government. Sign up for GoRecycle's collection here.

Accepted materials

  • Cooling appliances (portable or window air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, etc.)
  • Appliances equipped with a combustion engine or an oil or gas tank (lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.)
  • Outdoor items (tarps, pool covers, empty pool filters, hoses, pool or shed panels, BBQs (without the propane tank), patio chairs and tables, etc.)
  • Indoor items (mattresses, bed frames, sofas, carpets, blinds, bathtubs, exercise equipment, artificial Christmas trees, etc.)
  • Tree branches and trunks measuring more than 4 cm and less than 10 cm in diameter, natural Christmas trees (without decorations).
  • Wood (wood furniture, lumber, doors, cupboards, fences, floating floors, etc.)
  • Household appliances (stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves, dishwashers, etc.)
  • Heating equipment (water heaters, oil tanks, chimney stacks, electric fireplaces, etc.)
  • Electronics (TVs, home theatres)

Refused materials

  • Tires and vehicle parts
  • Construction and renovation residues (toilets, bathtubs, sinks, showers, gypsum, ceramics, etc.)
  • Flat glass (windows, mirrors, patio doors, window panes, etc.)
  • Branches and pieces of wood over 10 cm in diameter
  • Any item assembled from pieces of wood, such as, but not limited to, sections of stairs, walls, fences or decks
  • Bulky items weighing more than 50 kg, measuring more than 1.5 m in length or that cannot be carried by two people without mechanical equipment
  • Any bulky item that could damage the collection truck

To ensure your bulky items are collected

  • No more than 4 bulky items (12 for multi-unit residential buildings) per booking.
  • For houses and buildings with wheeled bins, bulky items must be placed curbside.
  • For buildings with containers, bulky items must be placed next to the garbage container or in some other spot in the yard designated by the building manager.
  • Carpets must be rolled and tied up.
  • Bits of wood must be placed in an open container such as a box or a trash with handles.
  • Branches must be tied in bundles.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you now have to make an appointment to have bulky items collected instead of having the collection scheduled as before?
This new arrangement is more efficient and reduces the distances trucks have to travel. From now on, they only have to go to the designated addresses rather than wind through all the streets looking for bulky items.
Why do bulky waste, bulky wood and bulky metal items all get picked up by the same truck?
Our new processing contract allows for all bulky items to go to a sorting station, where they can maximize the amount recovered.
I made an appointment to have my bulky items collected, but they were not (or only some of them were).
The collection takes place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. If you stayed within the limit of 4 items (12 for multi-unit residential buildings) and all your items were identified when you made the appointment, submit a request or call 311 from 6 p.m. on the day of your scheduled collection until 6 p.m. the following day.
What are my options if I have more bulky items than the allotted limit?
You can make an appointment to have the surplus picked up during the next collection, or you can drop them off at an ecocentre.
Why are electronic and cooling bulky items on a separate form in the DTRITUS app?
Electronics (TVs, home theatre systems, etc.) contain heavy metals, and cooling appliances (refrigerators, freezers, etc.) contain harmful gases. In order to ensure they are recycled in accordance with applicable regulations and do not pollute, those items cannot be collected by compactor trucks along with other bulky items. Gatineau has a separate contract with another company to collect them.
