Have you checked your smoke detectors?

Did you know that smoke detectors must be regularly checked by pressing the test button?

In a dwelling, smoke detectors must be installed on every floor, including the basement. They must be installed in hallways within 5 metres of every bedroom door.

When should batteries be changed?

  • When your smoke detector beeps intermittently, it means that the battery is running low and must be changed. Never use rechargeable batteries.
  • It is recommended that you chang the batteries every time you adjust the clock backwards or forwards.

Next replacement date: in the night of Saturday to Sunday November 1, 2015.

When should you replace your smoke detector?

As indicated in by-law number 774-2015 on fire prevention, smoke detectors in homes must be replaced if they were manufactured more than ten years ago, regardless of the type (battery, hardwired or combination).

  • If you have a battery-operated smoke detector:
It must be replaced by a battery-operated photoelectric one.
  • If you have an hardwired smoke detector:
It must be replaced by a photoelectric one, either battery-operated or hardwired.

Where are smoke detectors supposed to be installed?

  • In hallways within 5 metres of bedroom doors either:
    • on the ceiling, no less than 10 cm from a wall
    • on the wall, 10 to 30 cm from the ceiling

Smoke detectors should not be installed within one metre of kitchens or washrooms.

Smoke detectors may not be painted, and their batteries may not be removed, nor may an hardwired smoke detector be disconnected.
