Where and when to install a carbon monoxide (CO) detectors?

• In any room that has a combustion device.
• In any room that has direct access to a garage.

Exception: Any dwelling built before August 28, 2009 that has one or more combustion devices or direct access to a garage requires only one carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide detectors must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The best locations for installing carbon monoxide detectors are:

• in hallways within 5 metres of bedroom doors;
• close to the door opening into the garage; and
• in rooms with combustion devices.

They can be installed at any height because carbon monoxide mixes with air.

What should you do if the carbon monoxide detector goes off?

• Call 9-1-1 so that firefighters can come and measure the level of carbon monoxide in the air and determine the source.
• Do not go back until you receive the all-clear from the firefighters or an expert.

Useful tips for reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning:

• never leave an engine running in a garage, even if the door is open;
• never use a barbecue inside a building;
• never operate a combustion appliance (heater, mower, chain saw, generator, etc.) in a closed or poorly ventilated area;
• never use a gas stove to heat a home, even briefly;
• carry out annual maintenance on your combustion appliances; and
• install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

Possible signs of carbon monoxide poisoning:

• light: nausea, headache and fatigue
• severe: convulsions, fainting, coma, death
