Barbecues (coal or natural gas)  must be installed in a well-aerated location no less than one meter away from any combustible covering or building opening, such as a door, patio door or window.

It is prohibited to use a coal or natural gas barbecue:

• under a combustible balcony or combustible structure;
• inside a building;
• within one metre (3 feet) of any combustible cladding,a door or a window.

You should do a preventive check of your barbecue at the start of the season:

• Clean the interior and exterior of the barbecue.
• Ensure moving parts are free of debris.
• Ensure that the control knobs are set to off.
• Leave the lid open and carefully turn on the gas.
• Spray soapy water on all fittings to determine if there are any gas leaks.
• Replace defective parts if bubbles form when you turn on the gas.

Propane gas bottles

Propane tanks must not be thrown out with household garbage even if they appear empty; they must be returned to a propane distributor. In addition, it is prohibited to use or store a propane tank:

• under a combustible balcony or combustible structure;
• inside a building;
• within one metre (3 feet) of any opening in a building
• such as a vent, a door or a window;
• under an exit stairwell;
• below ground level;
• on the roof of a building.
