There must always be a minimum 1.5 m clearance around a fire hydrant, which must be clearly visible, unobstructed by trees, bushes, fences, etc.

Private fire hydrants

Private fire hydrants on commercial, industrial or major development properties must be:

  • painted (the head and the covers of the exit taps) according to NFPA standards. Colours vary depending on the flow from the fire hydrant;
  • maintained, checked and inspected annually;
  • clearly indicated so they can be readily located; and
  • kept clear of snow and otherwise accessible at all times.
