Interruption of a fire protection system

The building owner has to notify the Service de sécurité incendie, the building management staff, if applicable, and the occupants, that the fire protection systems, including the fire alarm systems, the sprinkler systems and the water supply systems, are undergoing testing or work as a result of which the system has to be shut off or its operation has to be limited.

For additional information and alternative fire safety measures in such case, call 311.

Alarm systems

Owners of buildings with fire alarm systems in keeping with the National Building Code (NBC) or the Code de construction du Québec (CCQ) (multiple dwellings, businesses, schools, etc.) must:

  • indicate the names of three people as well as their phone numbers inside the alarm system panel so they can be reached at all times in case of emergency;
  • depending on the size of the building, have a locked key box (SUPRA) for the exclusive use of firefighters to facilitate their access to the building. Certain conditions apply. For requirement details (location, height, etc.), call 3‑1-1;
  • notify the private call centre if the alarm system is interrupted because it is being tested or undergoing work—notice must be provided before the work begins and once it is finished; and
  • maintain the alarm systems in good working order even when the building is vacant.
