Every year, Gatineau inspects its fire hydrants. The work involves purging the system to eliminate any accumulated residue and ensure good and solid water flow. This is an essential step in fire safety operations.

In total, the work takes about 12 weeks. We ask that drivers slow down as they approach the work zones. Some of the work is done at night.

Gatineau alternates the sectors every year so that some of the 7,000 fire hydrants throughout the territory get inspected every two years.

Whenever possible, the water released from the hydrants is recovered and used to water municipal flowers and gardens.

Possible impact

There may be a slight drop in pressure in your taps, or the water may run slightly yellow, red or brown.

If that happens, open the cold water tap and let the water run until it comes out clear. This water is safe to drink. For faster results, it is recommended that you use the bathtub tap.
