Gatineau, March 19, 2014. – Gatineau and Quebec's ministère de la Sécurité publique and ministère des Transports held an information evening for Gatineau sector residents living between du Pinot and de Saint-Émilion.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform these residents about the preventive stabilization work that was going to be done in their neighbourhood in the winter of 2015.

Gatineau decided to proceed with the work after the new ground motion map prepared by the two provincial departments was released, even though the risk of landslide is not imminent.

If Gatineau is now in a position to intervene in a proactive manner, it is certainly because of the advances made in measurement tools used for mapping.

Landslides mainly occur in the spring and fall. Thus, until the work begins, the areas within the identified perimeter will be inspected.

Gatineau has applied to the ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec under its technical and financial support program to help pay for this work. This program, known as the Cadre pour la prévention de sinistres (2013-2020), covers up to 51.5% of the total required $2.9 million.

This is a standard risk analysis, which is conducted in several cities throughout Quebec. Landslides are natural phenomena caused by the seepage of water into the ground.

The information evening will be Webcast live, and the recorded version will be posted on the municipal Web site at www.gatineau.ca. Keywords: stabilization work. Information documents will also be posted on those pages.
