Spring Flooding – Status Report of May 5, 2017

Gatineau, May 5, 2017. – Ville de Gatineau is continuing to monitor the situation and to take actions on the ground due to flooding.

Status report

Water levels have remained relatively stable throughout the night in the Gatineau and Masson-Angers sectors.
In the Aylmer sector, levels are slightly on the rise.
More than 50 mm of rain are expected in Gatineau by Sunday.

Volunteers

Gatineau would like to thank volunteers for their involvement:
- On the day of May 4 (Thursday), 2,400 sandbags were filled by volunteers.
- 126 volunteers registered with 311 since Wednesday May 3.
Residents who would like to offer their services as volunteers should dial 311.
The main task at hand is to fill sandbags. It is recommended to bring a shovel.

Care of flood victims

As a reminder, two service centres for flood victims are at the disposal of residents:
- Jean-René-Monette community centre (89 Jean-René-Monette Street);
- Masson-Angers service centre (57 De Montréal Road).
The centres' hours vary depending on the needs and how the situation unfolds. In the late evening of May 4, the centres closed for the night. The two centres will reopen at 8 a.m. this morning.
As a reminder, ministère de la Sécurité publique has confirmed an agreement with the Red Cross concerning the care of flood victims.

Preventive and voluntary evacuations

Number of homes visited by firefighters (since May 1): 586
- Firefighters are visiting homes more than once in the majority of cases, which brings the total of visits to 2,846.
Number of homes evacuated: 148
Persons evacuated on a voluntary basis: 248
Persons being looked after by the Red Cross: 210
- Jean-René-Monette: 182
- Masson-Angers: 28
Homes where gas has been shut off: 129
Homes where power has been shut off: 15

Sandbags

Number of bags distributed since May 1: more than 77,000
Number of sandbags distributed since April 18: more than 152,500
