New description of suspect in a sexual assault

Gatineau, July 22, 2020. – The Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect in a violent sexual assault that occurred on July 6 around 4:30 a.m. near the Alexandra Bridge in Gatineau's Hull sector.


Quick facts

On July 7, the SPVG released an initial description of the suspect.
Further to its investigation, the SPVG is able to elaborate on certain details, and is once again asking the public for help in identifying the suspect.
The investigators are looking for an individual fitting the following description:
- man with light brown skin, between 25 and 30 years of age;
- thin body stature;
- approximately 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 metres) tall, and weighing approximately 160 pounds (72 kilos);
- black hair with an afro cut;
- hair was not necessarily curly, but the same length everywhere (approximately 2 to 3 inches long);
- uses French and English;
- was wearing a dark t-shirt and pants at the time of the assault; and
- had a disposable water bottle and a small box of Timbits just before the assault.
The victim did not know him. She appears to have been chosen at random.
The suspect may be from the Gatineau or Ottawa area.
Anyone with information about an individual matching that description is asked to contact the SPVG by calling 819-243-INFO (4636), option 5.

Recap of the incident

On July 6 around 4:30 a.m., SPVG police officers intervened near the Canadian Museum of History, to assist a woman who had been the victim of a sexual assault as she was walking alone.
The victim would have been grabbed near the Alexandra Bridge, and pulled into the bushes, where she was physically and sexually assaulted by the suspect.
The suspect was on foot, and would have been walking in the same area as the victim, on the Alexandra Bridge pedestrian walkway in the early hours of dawn.
The SPVG once again asks anyone who was in the sector delineated below between 2 and 5 a.m. on July 6 to contact the investigators at 819 243-INFO (4636), option 5:
- rue Laurier between boulevard Sacré-Coeur and the Portage Bridge;
- bike paths along the Canadian Museum of History and under the Alexandra Bridge; and
- boulevard Maisonneuve between rue Laurier and boulevard Sacré-Coeur, and in the surroundings.
In addition, the SPVG asks anyone in the sector who heard anything unusual or abnormal at the time of the crime, or who saw someone suspicious matching the description to contact the investigators.
Following the assault, the SPVG stepped up security in the sector and increased police presence.
The SPVG urges everyone to be extra cautious and to report anyone suspicious.
