Child Pornography: Several Teens Arrested in Gatineau

Gatineau, February 2, 2021. – Over the past few days, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) has arrested several male teens in connection with the possession and distribution of child pornography and internet luring.

Quick facts

The investigation, which has been underway for a few weeks, exposed a network for the exchange and sale of child pornography among male teens attending different schools throughout Gatineau.
The investigation helped determine that the female teens' photos were circulating unbeknownst to the victims in the group.
So far, the investigation indicates that the female teens' photos were obtained without their knowledge when someone accessed them by pirating their Snapchat account.
It should be noted that the victims were storing their photos in a passcode protected hidden Snapchat library called My Eyes Only.
The male teens who were arrested were taken to the police station to meet with investigators.
The accused youth appeared before the Court of Quebec, Youth Division, to face charges of possession and distribution of child pornography and internet luring. They were released under specific conditions.
Further to the searches and investigation, the investigators were able to identify several victims, with whom they met.
The investigation is ongoing in order to determine whether other teens may have been part of this network and whether there are other victims. There may be more arrests.
Given the nature of the cases and the ages of the individuals involved, SPVG has set up a security net to ensure that all of the teens involved, whether as suspects or victims, receive appropriate psychological support and the necessary guidance.
Because the accused are minors, no information that could be used to identify them can be disclosed, including the addresses where the searches took place and the schools attended by the teens.
SPVG is working closely with every school in connection with this investigation. Every school can count on the support of specialized police dedicated to high schools.

Prevention

SPVG reminds parents of the importance of having frank and open discussions with teens about their internet activities.
Dialogue is the best way to make children and teens aware of the risks associated with apps and ensuring that they report any suspicious behaviour occurring online.
Teens must be cautious whenever they use their electronic devices. Password protected hidden libraries and the use of ephemeral modes will not protect them against ill-intentioned individuals or friends or against account pirating or theft of private photos.
SPVG also wants to remind everyone that the possession and distribution of youth pornography, even if everyone involved consented, is a crime.
SPVG invites youth and their parents to seek help from the appropriate organizations if in doubt or mental distress.

Anyone with information about the production, possession or distribution of child pornography is asked to call the SPVG infoline at 819-243-4636, option 5.
