Gatineau, May 23, 2014. – In February, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) arrested Robert Jean, a 68 year-old Gatineau resident, for repeatedly sexually assaulting his biological daughter, who has an intellectual disability. Robert Jean will appear this morning in court in Gatineau to answer three separate charges of sexual assault by a person in a position of authority towards a vulnerable person (section 153.1 (1) of the Criminal Code), incest (section 155 (2) of the Criminal Code) and sexual assault (section 271 (a) of the Criminal Code).

The sexual assaults occurred over a period of 14 years, from 1991 to 2005, while the victim, aged 18 to 32, was in a situation of dependency with her father. The victim is currently living with a family member who is looking after her.

After confiding in a family member and receiving valuable advice from the Centre d'aide et de lutte contre les agressions sexuelles de l'Outaouais (CALAS), the victim went to an SPVG police station to file a complaint in January 2014. The victim's testimony and the ensuing investigation led to the arrest of Robert Jean on February 10. He was released with an undertaking to appear and a prohibition against contacting the victim either directly or indirectly.

The SPVG, in particular the investigators who worked on this case, want to underline the victim's courage in reporting to someone she trusted the assaults she had suffered over several years.

The SPVG urges victims of sexual assault not to hesitate in asking for help or filing a complaint with the SPVG by going to one of the police stations or calling 819-246-0222.
