Gatineau introduces an accelerated demolition and reconstruction approval process for tornado victims

Gatineau, September 25, 2018. – Ville de Gatineau has set up an accelerated demolition certificate and building approval application process. The owners of buildings damaged by the tornado can now contact the Service de l'urbanisme et du développement durable (SUDD) for those approvals.


Quick facts

These applications will be treated in priority by SUDD.
The following dedicated email addresses should be used for certificate of authorizations and building permits, respectively:

Property owners should call the following number if they have any questions regarding certificate of authorizations and building permits:

For any general questions regarding the tornado, citizens are invited to contact 3-1-1.

Obtaining a certificate of authorization for a demolition

A certificate of authorization is required to demolish any principal building.
- The demolition of an accessory building, such as a garage, a shed or a pergola, does not require a certificate of authorization.
Applications and related documents can be submitted to tornade.demolition@gatineau.ca. Applications can also be submitted in person at the service centre for the sector in which the concerned building is located.
The certificate of authorization will be issued after the application has been reviewed to ensure that all requirements have been met and the applicable fees have been paid. The work may only begin once the certificate of authorization has been issued.

Obtaining a building permit

A building permit is required for the construction of a new principal building or for the renovation of an existing principal building.
A building permit is required for any works where costs before taxes exceed $10,000, including labour and construction materials.
A building permit is required regardless of the costs for the following works:
- foundation, structural or internal partitions;
- fire separation, sealing or closing works, components of a sprinkler system, of a fire detection or warning network or any components of a fire separation system, a fire detection or protection system, or a fire control or suppression system, when required under an applicable code;
- blocking a window or adding a window; and
- replacing exterior cladding material.
Applications and related documents can be submitted to tornade.reconstruction@gatineau.ca. Applications can also be submitted in person at the service centre for the sector in which the concerned building is located.
The construction permit will be issued after the application has been reviewed to ensure that all requirements have been met and the applicable fees have been paid. The work may only begin once the construction permit has been issued.
- Work done without a permit is subject to sizeable fines.
