Gatineau, May 13, 2014. – Given a difference of $15 million between the estimates and the assessments received from the lowest bidder for the construction of its multi-purpose centre, the City of Gatineau has decided to reject the bids received.

"Faced with this disparity, Gatineau's municipal council is forced to abstain from awarding the contract. The municipal council does not want to pay more than the amount anticipated, that is $63.5 million, for the project," explained Gatineau's Mayor Mr. Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin.

The professionals hired by the City of Gatineau assessed the costs of building the new multi-purpose centre at $50.6 million. On May 1, the lowest bidder presented a proposal totalling $66,219,622. This proposal is more than $15 million above the estimates provided by the professionals hired by the City for the completion and development of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, scenographical and LEED certified elements.

The total cost of the project for the multi-purpose centre is estimated at $63.5 million for the construction of the new building, the professional fees, as well as the demolition of the existing arena and purchase of scenographical equipment. It should be remembered that the demolition of the current building has been estimated at $1 million.

The multi-purpose centre project includes the construction of a multi-purpose sports and culture complex, with about 14,000 m2 of space, including 4,400 seats and 40 suites for businesses. Among other things, the complex includes a skating rink, administrative offices, dressing rooms for players, a ticket office, a service room and a press box.

Call for tenders file sent to the permanent anti-corruption unit (UPAC)

This past week, some issues were brought to the attention of the City of Gatineau, who had the duty to report them to the proper authorities. Therefore, as of May 8, the City's management, in light of these issues and the verifications carried out by Gatineau's municipal police (SPVG), transferred the file to the permanent anti-corruption unit (UPAC).
