Gatineau, October 16, 2013. – Gatineau and Diving Plongeon Canada are pleased to announce the signing of a four-year agreement formalizing the Gatineau sports centre as the venue for the Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix from 2014 to 2017.
"Gatineau is proud to host the Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix. Holding this prestigious international event at the sports centre for the next four years will give Gatineau the opportunity to position itself as a prime destination for major sports competitions. This kind of event generates over a million dollars annually in economic benefits for Gatineau and regional businesses," announced Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau.
"The hard work by staff in the municipal administration, the sports centre and the local diving club, as well as by volunteers helped make the 2013 Canada Cup an outstanding event. Even the participants were full of praise," indicated Diving Plongeon Canada Chief Operating Officer Penny Joyce. "As a result, the decision to hold the event in Gatineau was a natural one, and we look forward to making it even bigger and better over the next four years," added Ms. Joyce.
Under this agreement, Gatineau commits to contributing $80,000 in goods and services as well as $20,000 in partnership with Tourisme Outaouais for an estimated total $100,000.
In May 2013, the sports centre hosted the event, which attracted 97 athletes from 16 countries. Since opening in 2010, the sports centre has had close to 60 international, national and provincial competitions, 25 of which were in 2013.
Holding this event in Gatineau will provide a boost to the local economy. An agreement between Diving Plongeon Canada and the Crowne Plaza Gatineau hotel has already been signed, making it the official hotel and sponsor for the competition through the next four years.
Events like the Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix exist thanks to agreements such as the one with Gatineau, and to a large extent thanks to international single sport hosting programs set up by the Government of Canada (Sport Canada) and the Government of Quebec (MELS).
