Gatineau to reopen the centre sportif

Gatineau, February 6, 2017. – The results of the analyses at the centre sportif demonstrate that there is no asbestos either in the air or in settled dust. Thus, Gatineau is set to reopen the centre sportif as of 4 p.m. today.
The health and safety of employees and users of the centre sportif are priorities for Ville de Gatineau. The centre sportif can reopen its doors because Gatineau is now assured that there is no risk.
On Friday, February 3, experts took samples throughout the centre sportif. The purpose of that exercise was to determine whether there was any asbestos elsewhere than in the room that had been closed off in the basement.
- The test results are negative, and meet the standards of the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety.
All of the pipes in the building have been inspected.
The mechanical room in the basement remains closed off. It has been inspected and cleaned, and will undergo work in the coming days.
These measures were taken with the approval of the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST).

Activities at the centre sportif

As of 4 p.m. today, the centre sportif programs will resume as indicated on the calendar of activities.
The centre sportif will be open this evening to residents who are signed up for classes or who would like to use the facilities.
Residents are invited to consult the municipal Web site for further details about the program.

Recap of the events

On Thursday, February 2, municipal crews were doing maintenance work on the chlorination system. They noticed that part of a fibre cement pipe containing a small proportion of chrysotile asbestos appeared to be in poor condition
The room, located in the basement of the centre sportif, is not accessible to the public, and was closed off as a preventive measure. Gatineau also notified the CNESST about the situation.
Gatineau crews acted diligently and cautiously. The centre sportif was swiftly shut down, and a firm of experts was called in to take samples and conduct analyses.
- The results of the analyses confirmed the presence of dust containing a certain amount of asbestos in a room in the basement.
- The experts were then mandated to take samples throughout the building.
Permanent employees of the centre sportif were all relocated to other municipal buildings and all activities at the centre sportif were suspended until 4 p.m. on Monday, February 6.

Questions about the potential impact of asbestos on health should be directed to the Direction de santé publique de l'Outaouais at 819-966-6484.

“We can never be too cautious when it comes to health and safety. I am satisfied with the vigilance and speed shown by our crews. Given that we now have confirmation that there is no asbestos in the dust or in the air at the centre sportif, our employees will be able to return to their place of work. Users will also be able to resume their activities,” indicated Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin.
