Returning to School
Gatineau, May 8, 2020. – In preparation for the gradual return to school starting on May 11, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) is reminding everyone of the safety measures to be followed in school zones.
At a glance:
●
The Government of Quebec has indicated that this return to school is not mandatory. This means that there will likely be fewer students than before the crisis. But it is still important to adopt behaviours that will ensure the safety of the students going to and coming from school.
●
Mindful of the concerns raised by this return to school among both parents and students, the SPVG has developed an action plan to increase police presence around schools during the busiest times for the first few weeks.
●
The SPVG reminds drivers to stay within the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones.
●
School crossing guards will also be on hand to ensure the safety of students and enable them to safely cross at the busiest intersections.
Tips for parents:
●
If your children walk to school, make the trip with them in order to re-familiarize them with the route and ensure that they feel confident doing it on their own.
●
If you drive your children and drop them off at school, be sure to stop in a safe place, and respect the signs.
●
Be courteous, yield to the children, and be extra cautious. Children may behave in unpredictable ways, and the excitement of returning to class may prompt them to do things that could put their personal safety at risk.
●
Avoid doing U-turns or other dangerous manoeuvres within the school zone.
Reminder for children:
●
Children should use the school corridors identified by oval fluorescent yellow markers, as these indicate the safest route to school.
●
They must cross at the marked pedestrian crossings, and do so quickly but without running.
●
It is important to remind them to always look both left and right, and left again, before crossing.
●
They must also wait until vehicles are completely stopped before crossing, and maintain visual contact with the drivers to ensure that they are seen.
●
If there is a school crossing guard at the intersection, the children must follow his/her instructions.
