CoDeBars: a simple and tangible solution against impaired driving!

Are you planning on going out to a bar with friends? Don't put your safety or that of others at risk. The CoDeBars—which stands for Conducteurs signés et Bars—prevention program invites you and your friends to pick a designated driver. In return, that person will receive free non-alcoholic drinks throughout the evening.

This way, you can all have a good time while making sure that everyone gets home safely!

How does it work? It's quite simple!

  1. Pick your destination from among the participating establishments
Participating licensed establishments are clearly identified by a sign on the front door or in strategic locations inside the building.

Even better, plan your outing by checking the list of participating Gatineau establishments at www.codebars.ca/gatineau*.
  2. Pick one member of your group to be the designated driver
The group must comprise at least three people, one of whom undertakes to act as the designated driver. That role must be taken seriously! The other members of the group must be able to count on the designated driver to get them home safe and sound.
  3. Identify yourselves and get the CoDeBars wristband
The designated driver must identify himself or herself to an employee of the establishment to receive a CoDeBars wristband.
  4. Enjoy your evening!
After receiving his or her wristband, the designated driver will get a free non-alcoholic drink from a list determined by the establishment every time the group orders a round.

The CoDeBars program originated in Sherbrooke in 2017. It was adapted to Gatineau by the SPVG in 2019.

Thank you to the bar owners who have adopted the CoDeBars concept!

By offering free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers, bar owners are showing that they care about the well-being and safe return home of their customers. We thank them for being part of the collective and social movement focused on validating and encouraging the role of designated drivers!

Licensed establishment owners in Gatineau interested in joining the program should contact an SPVG officer at 819-243-2345, extension 1338.
