Detachable cables

Detachable cables (electric extensions) must be approved by the Standards Council of Canada (CSA, ULC, etc.).

It is prohibited to:

  • conceal them under a rug or any other combustible material;
  • cover them with material that could cause overheating;
  • attach them to a structure in a permanent fashion or in a way that could damage their casing;
  • pass them through a wall, ceiling, or door or window opening or to jam them under furniture; or
  • install them in a place where they could be damaged by people or vehicles passing by.

Electric panels

Electric panels must be free of any stored or combustible materials in a radius of at least one meter.

Every fuse and circuit breaker in your electrical panel must be labelled.

If you are having a problem with a circuit breaker, i.e., it always switches itself OFF automatically when you try to reset it, and if you are unable to identify the cause of the problem, have the electrical circuit checked by a qualified electrician who can determine the cause and carry out any required repairs.
