Are your connections to the sanitary and storm sewer systems to code?

To properly protect your residence, make sure that it is equipped with all of the protective devices required by municipal by-law and the Plumbing Code. Those devices are the check valve and the anti-siphon valve and, if necessary, a sump pump.

Check your plumbing equipment in the basement: shower, sink, toilet and floor drain. Property owners must check whether plumbing protection devices in their basements:

  • are installed in accordance with the type of sewer system to which they are connected;
  • are installed and readily accessible;
  • are in good working order;
  • need to be repaired or replaced; and
  • if the situation in which the building is located calls for the installation of a sump pump to evacuate drainage water that might seep in near the foundations when the check valve is closed as a result of a municipal sewer backup.

In many cases, your plumber is the first one to check with. As a skilled and specialized professional in the field, your plumber can advise you on the best plumbing for your basement.
