What actions is the City taking to reduce textile waste?

Faced with the growth of the fast fashion phenomenon and the drastic reduction in the number of donation boxes available in Gatineau, the quantity of textiles sent to landfill by Gatineau residents has multiplied by 5 in the last decade. To address this issue and meet the 2023-2029 Waste Management Plan (PGMR) goal of reducing textile disposal by 75%, the City must implement specific measures for textile recovery. A working group composed of local reuse organizations and City representatives was set up in the fall of 2023 with the aim of identifying textile recovery issues and solutions to address them. Following six working group meetings, a public participation report was drafted.

An action plan was presented to City Council as part of the 2025 budget review. If the action plan budget is adopted in December 2024, implementation will start in January 2025.
